Social media sites are extremely popular and there always seems to be a new one around the corner that everyone is talking about.
But when we sign up to use any online site, do you ever pay attention to the terms of agreement that we eventually have to agree to before we can join? What are in these terms of agreements to which most of us only give a quick glance before we join?
Why is it important for us to consider these agreements before we click yes to agreeing to them?
Watch the two videos below and answer the question as you view.
If you are unsure of your answer, remember to watch that section again, since your answers will be part of the evaluation for this unit.
Your Turn: Researching Terms and Conditions
- Search the Internet for articles that discuss social media terms and conditions. Hint: Search for "Terms and Conditions" combined with words such as, "scary" or "terrible" or "extreme" or disturbing".
- Consider whether you think the sources you found are credible (can trust what they are telling you) before you use them. If you are uncertain, you can ask your teacher.
- In Google Drive, create a new Google document and type the name of the company along with the details about the terms and conditions. Do this for five different companies.
- When you have finished, click here and submit your answers in the form (make sure to include your name).
If you are unsure of your answer, remember to watch that section again, since your answers will be part of the evaluation for this unit.
Journal Entry #4 (Digital Etiquette)
Consider the following questions when completing your journal entry in your Google Document titled "Journal Entries BBT." Subtitle it "Journal #4: Digital Etiquette."
- What did you find most surprising when it comes to issues around Digital Etiquette? Explain.
- Do you think most Internet users read or concern themselves with the terms and conditions agreements when joining a site or online service? If not, why should they?
- Considering the different issues this unit looked at about behaving appropriately online, how would you rate your own online behaviour on a scale of one to ten (one being very poor, ten being very good). Discuss.
- What is one thing you can take away from this unit and put in practice to improve your online behaviour. Explain.
- What do you think is the biggest issue when it comes to Digital Etiquette among young people? Explain. Place your answer to this last question in bold.
