Digital Rights and Responsibilities (3 of 10)

Introduction

We already looked at digital rights and responsibilities when we studied the Acceptable Use of Computer Policy. You may remember creating different scenarios and discussing what would be the best decision by the students involved in those scenarios.

This section extends on that activity by looking not just at how we behave online when in school, but also how we behave online in our own personal lives.

View the introductory video below and remember to carefully answer the questions, because the answers to the videos are part of the assessment for this unit.





Assignment  - Digital Ten Commandments 
  1. Spend some time searching the Internet for the basic rights and responsibilities that Canadians and people from other nations have. 
  2. When you discover some of the real-life rights and responsibilities, you will then create what you believe are the Digital Ten Commandments that all people of Earth should follow. 
  3. Have some fun. Use  “Thou Shall Not…” “Thou Shall….”
  4.  Put some serious thought into what rules, rights, and responsibilities we should have online to make online life a wonderful place for everyone of every age.
  5. Download both graphics (see below) and upload them to Google Drawings in your Google Drive.
  6. You will then type your "commandments" in each tablet on Google Drawings.
  7. When you have completed the assignment using Google Drawings, share the assignment through Google Drive with your teacher
  8. Title the assignment "Assignment: Digital Ten Commandments (Include your name in the title)"

Journal Entry #3 (Digital Rights and Responsibilities)

Consider the following questions when completing your journal entry in your Google Document titled "Journal Entries BBT." Subtitle it "Journal #3: Digital Rights and Responsibilities."
  • What did you find most surprising when it comes to digital rights and responsibilities? Explain.
  • Do you think most people act responsibly when online? Explain why or why not. 
  • If you had to pick only one commandment out of the ten you created, which one do you think is most important. Why?
  • What do you think is the biggest issue around digital rights and responsibilities among young people? Explain. Place your answer to this last question in bold on your blog.
