Today's automobiles are constantly being introduced with new technologies. Many of these technologies are developed to address issues around safety and comfort.

Automobile manufacturers invest a lot of time and money in research and the development of new technologies.

In fact, the world of technology and the world of automobile technology has increasingly converged with built in technology from companies like Microsoft and Apple now available in many new vehicles. Additionally, Google has been developing and testing its own self-driving automobiles.

Below are some different activities that you will complete for the purpose of becoming more familiar with some of the new technologies as well as some technologies that are still being developed.

Careers and Certification in the Automotive Industry (4 of 8)

Image from morguefile.com
If we stop and consider what career opportunities are available in the automotive industry, we could probably come up with quite a few.

Automobiles are a big part of most people's lives in North America, especially in areas were there is limited or no public transportation.

Automobile owners get to know many different people who work in the automotive industry, and they see some of them on a regular basis, like their mechanic, for example.

However, there are a lot of other career opportunities in the automotive industry as well.

Part One of Three - Article and Response

Automobile Body Styles and Designs (5 of 8)

Image from morguefile,com
We usually take automobiles for granted and do not spend a lot of time thinking about how they are designed. In this assignment you will be considering:
  • Automobile body styles and their purposes
  • How automobile design works
Title this Google Document "Automobile Body Styles and Design"

Part One of Two
  • Check out this site. It describes the different automobile body styles.
  • Read through the information for each body style.
  • Select five different styles and in your Google Document do a short write up and find a photo online for each style. Start your photo search on Photos for Class (you can also do a Google search, but make sure to adjust the "usage right" filter under "tools")
  • Wherever you get your photos, make sure to cite the websites.
  • Create the subtitle "Automobile Body Styles" in your Google Document for this activity.

Creating Your Own Basic Automobile Design (6 of 8)

For this assignment you will look at how 3D printers are being used for car design, and you will create your own basic car design using the program Tinkercad.

Part One of Two

In a Google Document, express your thoughts about this video. Title it "3D Printed Car" and consider the following questions for your response:
  • Do you think the use of 3D printing can help car designers? Why or why not? (5 pts)
  • Do you think that cars would ever be manufactured this way? Explain your reasoning. (5 pts)
  • What would you create with a 3D printer? It could be a car, part of a car or any other item. Discuss. (5 pts)
  • If you were going to create your own car, which body style would you use (consider the body styles you explored in a previous assignment)? Explain why.  (5 pts)
Part Two of Two

A Keychain for Your Vehicle (7 of 8)

Keychain design: The design is from Thingiverse and then
some minor modifications were made using Tinkercad.
(Created by Macaully Gillespie)
  • You will create a keychain design for the vehicle that you made in the previous assignment.
  • Considering your car design, think about what would be the best keychain design to complement your vehicle.
  • Click here to access some designs (search "Keychains") that you can export and modify in TinkerCad. Or you may want to create your design completely from scratch in TinkerCad
  • NOTE: Keep an eye on your scale to make sure your keychain is the appropriate size. Learn more about scaling by clicking here
  • NOTE: Make sure your object is laying flat and directly on the work-plane.
  • Once you have completed your design in TinkerCad, share your design by getting a shared link on TinkerCad and then send that link to your teacher through Google Drive (put the link in a Google Document).
