This assignment is the concluding activity for the Digital Citizenship Unit. You will create a poster to raise awareness around an issue on one of the topics that was explored in the Digital Citizenship Unit. Below is a list of those topics:
- Digital Security
- Digital Communication
- Digital Rights and Responsibilities
- Digital Etiquette
- Digital Wellness
- Digital Business
- Digital Access
- Digital Law
- Digital Literacy (no journal entry)
Deciding on the Issue
- You will first need to consider what issue you want to tackle.
- You will need to review your eight journal entries and look at the statements that you were asked to place in bold. Those statements were in response to what issues you felt were the biggest ones facing youth on each topic. SUGGESTION: CLICK HERE to see possible topics you could consider.
- Decide on one or two of the statements that you think would be a good place to start for your awareness poster.
- Share your final choices with a few other students and gather some feedback.
- Decide on which issue you want to develop for your digital awareness message.
- Also decide on a second issue, as a backup.
- Who is the target audience? (Your poster should be for a certain age group. Depending on your issue, consider what will be the best age group that will be the target audience for your poster.
- What is the issue? How will you make your target audience aware of it in your message? (Strive to keep your message simple, straightforward and effective. Too many words or information may be overlooked.)
- What is the call of action? (A call of action addresses the issue and helps your target audience to find solutions to the issue).
- What would be effective images to complement the message for the poster? (For images, you will need to consider either drawings or photos that will be part of your poster. If you did the unit which involved photography, consider the photo techniques you used in class. An effective image or images will draw your audience to read the poster.)
Aside from the poster design, you will also write a rationale that will explain the following:
- What issue your poster campaign will address
- Who the target audience is and why
- Explain the design elements of your poster (include selection or creation of images: sketches, photos and/or drawings)
- Discuss your message and call to action and how you think it addresses the issue and will be effective for your target audience
Follow these steps when creating your poster awareness campaign:
- Consider the four questions above (target audience, issue, call of action, effective images)
- Complete your brainstorming sheet (Click here to make a copy in your Google Drive)
- Determine how you will complete all the poster elements. (creating or retrieving images, message and call to action, poster design, writing the rationale, printing and distribution of the posters)
- Read the steps on creating a poster
- Look at different examples of posters for design ideas (see below)
- View the templates for poster designs on Canva (you can access Canva as a third-party app though your Google Drive account)
- Create or retrieve your images (they have to be copyright free or your own).
- Write out specifically what will be on your poster (information, message and call to action)
- Design your poster on Canva
- Print off a copy and gather feedback from other students and use the checklist below before making final revisions
- Revise the poster and print off final copies
- Save your poster as a digital copy (jpeg or png format)
- Complete the rationale for your poster design (see section above for more details)
- Using Google Drive, write your rational in Google Docs and include the digital image of the poster.
- Share the poster design and rational with your teacher (make sure to include your name in the Google Document title).
